Feels like Football

 This week I saw this bus parked in the lot of my local Wal-mart. And then this chair in my grocery store. Looks like it's almost football season! It sure is going to be exciting this year... Since we're now in the Big Ten, the Penn State - Nebraska rivalry in our home is going to really heat up!
I am dying to buy one of these little camp chairs for Millie. Every since she learned to climb on our kitchen chairs, she has been climbing on EVERYTHING. Maybe a chair her size would be less dangerous. :) I've also been hunting for the perfect Husker tee for her. She's not quite ready for the 2T size but I'm so done with onesies. And I think this year she might get a PSU tee and  Nebraska tee. Maybe I won't let her out of the house in Nittany Lion blue. Millie has been learning new words left and right. I can't wait to hear her say GO BIG RED!

Home on the Plains

I was reminded this week of how much I love my home state and in particular the area around my hometown. As we sped down the interstate, I could see the horizon stretching for miles. The corn had all grown tall and I could see the patchwork of green fields all around. And this time of year many of the farmers are getting their field's sprayed for bugs so there we're crop dusters diving all over the place. I grew up only a few miles from a local airstrip and remember the planes flying over our house often. We loved watching them and waving! I always hoped they would see me and my siblings waving. :) And usually if they did, we got a little wave from the wings. Now that was a special day! Back to our recent drive... Millie was asleep in the backseat and I was a little sad that she missed seeing all the planes. There were crop dusters diving on both sides of the road. I could see the flashes of white and yellow flying through the air from miles away. As we drove closer I could see that one of the yellow planes was spraying right next to the interstate and he had to go right over the road when he turned around. I sure hoped that he would buzz us when we got close. It was our lucky day! We happened to just be passing by as he finished a pass and came whizzing right over the car!! Now I remember being told that we should never hope that the planes would go right over us because they could get chemicals on you. But I'm thinking that times have changed and hopefully they're better at turning off the spray when they're not over the corn.
I love watching the seasons change and the landscape grow in Nebraska. I love watching the corn pop up the turn the plains green in the spring. (Sorry allergy sufferers.) In the fall, I love seeing the haze from corn dust as I watch the big orange harvest moon come up. There's just something about this land that warms my heart.

VBall Game 2010

We made it to 1 volleyball game this year - the last one. I love going to Husker VB games! The atmosphere is like none other. And is also reminds me how tall and talented these girls really are. On TV it's easy for me to miss it. They all look the same height on TV. GO BIG RED!

New Era in Football

Well yesterday marked the first Nebraska football game of 2010. We had friends over and enjoyed mexi dip. Mexi dip is standard game food at our house! Millie dressed in red and white for the first time! Eventually I'll get pictures up of her in her 'my first Nebraska tee' and little white skirt.

But I have to admit, I hardly watched the first half and was still distracted during the second half. Crazy! I know. It's so unlike me! I love Nebraska football but, what can I say, I love my baby girl more. :) I spent the first half with her - watching, playing and entertaining. And I loved it! I hardly noticed I was missing the game. I put her to bed at half time and figured I would be able to enjoy the second half. But since we had company, I was still distracted. I kept listening for her because I knew the extra noise might cause some sleep issues but she slept right through our noise. :) She's such a good baby! So I do feel little bad that I paid so little attention to the game, but we played nobody and I had a good excuse. I still plan on enjoying Nebraska football but I now have a new priority during the game. Millie comes before football. I don't think that makes me a bad fan, it just makes me a good mom. 

There have been so many things over the past almost 8 months that have changed. O takes priority over many things in my life, including myself a lot of the time. It's sometimes a hard adjustment, especially when it affect other people I love. But I am so thankful to have her. She's a blessing!
OK, I'm stopping. I could write post after post just gushing about her. I think I'm in love.

The Glory of Creation

I love sunsets and sunrises! When I lived in the mountains I was saddened by the way that the mountains interrupted my view of the sunset. They were still often beautiful but they just couldn't compare to the beauty we behold in Nebraska.Atheists Miss the Joy

If you look at sunsets and sunrises without knowing that God is painting them then and there, you will miss the point. Sunsets and sunrises do not just happen. God does them. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy. (Psalms 65:8) What are they so happy about? Psalm 19 gives the answer. They are happy because they are showing the glory of God. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (v. 1). How happy is the rising sun to display the glory of God? Answer: “In them [the heavens] God has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy” (Psalm 19:4-5). A bridegroom beaming, and an Eric Liddell feeling God’s pleasure when he runs. Sunrises and sunsets are like that. They bid us join their joy in putting God on display in the world.
My favorite sunset memory is from high school. Sorry, sunrises and I aren't on the same schedule. One evening I was up on the shop roof at our new place. The corn wasn't up so I could still see for miles and miles. As the sun set, the horizon slowly turned to golden fire (like the picture above). It was so amazing! After a few moments I raced down the ladder and got on my bicycle. I frantically peddled the 1/2 mile home, hoping that I might catch the last of the sunset on my camera before it was too dark. Sadly I didn't make it but I still remember this as being the most amazing sunset ever! 3/4s of the horizon was afire with a deep reddish orange flame.
BEHOLD THE GLORY OF THE LORD. His creation proclaims His name! I can't see a sunset without seeing His hand.

Kori Cooper getting pumped!! She was great to watch! How awesome that she is so excited and supportive in spite of the fact that she's hurt on the sidelines. Also, did you hear the story about the camo jackets? Coach Cook gave a talk about fight or flight. The team chose fight on the court!

Just a neat shot of the Penn State blockers. Apparently they have a thing for crazy fingernail polish. I was amazed at how well their setter blocked. She was pretty tall and really feisty!

This is after the PSU v Stanford game which we all know PSU won.

Husker Volleyball

Wow! What a match!! If you didn't watch the Huskers and the Nittany Lions duke it out last night on the volleyball court, you missed out. Huskers.com says Nittany Lions Nip Nebraska in NCAA Semifinals. It was an awesome 5 sets to watch! Check out some great stats at Post-Match Notes: Penn State vs. Nebraska. I really love watching Nebraska Volleyball. :)This picture is from their win over Washington. Sorry I couldn't find any pictures from last night. I'll update when I find some. PSU has some amazing players. Their hitters were so powerful. Sadly my turncoat hubby was secretly cheering for them. In light of the fact, that we weren't supposed to have a chance against Penn State, I'm really happy we put up such a great fight. And I'm happy we broke their consecutive set win streak! Unless we have it, I think records are made to be broken. :) I've decided to cheer for Stanford on Saturday. I've watched them make it to the championship game the last 3 years and not get the final victory. I've seen Barboza, Klineman and Akinradewo have some awesome games in the finals and walk away disappointed. This is their year! And I just can't go for a PSU repeat and total domination of this year. I love an underdog!

GO BIG RED!!!

It is 25 days until the Huskers are back on the field. I canNOT wait! I can just feel the excitement as I think about it. I love the feel of game days whether I'm in town for the game or at home. I like to turn on the radio and listen to the Big Red Network all morning. And of course I like to crank up the tunnel walk when it comes on. I get goosebumps even at home!
But nothing can beat actually being at Memorial Stadium. The food is great - I like to get nachos with everything but who doesn't like a smashed dog from the wiener slinger. You can feel the excitement building as people come in to their seats and the players start warming up. When the players head back into the locker room it's really time to get pumped up. I love watching everyone stand up on tip toes as the tunnel walk begins. The excitement and thrill I feel at the climax of the Tunnel Walk when the players run in and the whole stadium erupts is unexplainable!

This picture is from the Texas A&M game we went to last fall. A, my brother loves getting his picture taken. :) I have to say, that my favorite games have been with AJ and this one might be at the top of my list with the game we went to a couple years ago close behind. The first game we went to was a cold one. I love cold game days. I get to bundle up in my red puffy coat and squeeze into our row by some hopefully nice people. AJ and I sat by a large farmer that day who made jokes about fitting us all onto the seat every time we stood up and down. Very funny! I love husker fans (not the disrespectful ones).

The Texas A&M game was a hot one. I mean hot! But we sat in the faculty section. At one point during the first half, everyone began booing the refs for a bad call on defense. AJ thought they were booing the Blackshirts, who have seen better seasons. She immediately stood up and screamed "Go Blackshirts, we support you! WELL, at least I support you!!" The person next to us pointed out that we were booing the refs. But it was really funny!

So here's a picture of AJ and I from that game. We had a blast in spite of the lose. I sure hope our team is better this season. And according to most reports we will be. Well, at least we can't be worse than last year. I'm so happy that Bo respects and is excited about Nebraska traditions and walk-on Nebraska players. I think the passion of the Nebraska boys is what drives the passion of the team on the field. I look forward to seeing what this season brings and am really happy it's only 25 days away! Even though summer is my favorite season, Fall is a very close second because of football. Goooooo Biiiigg Reeeeedd! GO BIG RED!
